Be Aware of These Sources of Moisture in Your Home

We all understand that dampness and moisture within a home can lead to mold. But do you understand that there are many things besides leaks that count as “moisture”? At United Property Inspectors, Inc., we’ve seen cases of mold start simply because of poor ventilation inside a room.

Mold-causing moisture can take quite a few different forms. Here’s what you need to be mindful of:

Your Shower

A shower in a small, windowless bathroom is basically heaven for mold. It provides everything mold needs to grow: warmth, oxygen, a source of food (i.e., the wall), and moisture. This is one of the most common places for mold to thrive, so keep an eye on it, and don’t let it get out of control.

Humidity and Rain

The air inside your home can be greatly affected by the weather—namely, if it’s extra humid or rainy. When there’s more moisture in the air than normal, you may begin to see mold growing around your place.

Little Ventilation

Poor ventilation in a room can create pockets of stagnant moist air, which is mold’s favorite thing. if your home has small rooms without windows or vents, beware and keep a sharp eye out for mold.

HVAC Systems

Mold can grow due to the humidity that’s created when an HVAC system artificially heats or cools the air.

Hanging Up Wet Clothes

Almost everyone is guilty of this! There are just some clothes that shouldn’t go in the dryer—so they get hung up on the most convenient “rack” in the house: the shower pole! But the wetness in those clothes evaporates into the air, and this can be a big mold trigger. If you begin to notice mold in your shower, re-think your drying strategy.

Condensation

Anywhere condensation collects inside your home is a risk for mold growth. Water from condensation can appear on pipes, around the refrigerator, and on cold surfaces. Be sure to keep an eye on this!

Leaky Pipes & Roofs

These are frustrating sources of mold growth because they tend to go unnoticed until it’s too late. Pipes are often “hidden” in a basement or cabinet, so when they leak, it can take some time before it’s caught. Same with the roof—it can be months before leaks are found. This is why it’s very important to regularly check on all pipes and for any leaking spots on the roof.

If you find yourself faced with mold, don’t take any chances. Even if it doesn’t seem to be black mold, it can still cause damage to your home and your health. At United Property Inspectors, we are expert mold testers who can determine your mold situation and help you prevent major damage to your home.
